Brides Unite in Chico

Posted by LauraS (Chico, United States) on 3 February 2009 in Documentary & Street.

Recent events caused rallies to take place in Chico, CA, where equal rights for all became a hot topic. Two lesbian brides stood tall, blindfolded to show the injustice for the "Prop 8" issue. Marriage should be legal for all.

Visual learner that I am, I enjoy taking photographs, seeing others photos, and sharing them all. How we view the world may influence others to see more clearly that the world we live in is truly a beautiful and spectacular place. Now, I am using a Panasonic DMC-ZS1. Many of my photos over the last two years have been taken with my Sony DSC-T300. Unfortunately I've broken it. Occasionally, I am using my iPhone, and you will see that listed to the right of the photos.

Truly, I am an amateur who loves to look at the world, marvel at its beauty, and capture a slice for myself to remember and to share.

Powerful, amazing image with these women in gowns that hold symbolism. Their eyes covered with flags that portray the archetypal mother bear. These same flags hold the power of our State, the state of confusion and fear which blinds some of our citizens. Their vision held hostage now. I find it very powerful that the "Rainbow Flag" has only shades of grey in this Black and White image.

The fact of their hands being held shows their love and determination. It also gives them a partner in facing this challenge.

Powerful, powerful image. Bravo!

@San G.: Thanks, San. Yes, it was a powerful day to be there, and see these two young, small women stand so tall, and be so silent yet strong in their conviction.

great shot concerning a topic that is also of relevance to the present situation in Germany

@R.J.Dee: Thanks for your comment. Germany, too, is struggling, eh? Big Sigh.

This is so weird at first glance and so good after I read your caption - great message of tolerance...

@k@: Thanks for your notice of tolerance. In today's intolerant world, there are many of us who are very tolerant and starting to ACT that way.

Damon Schreiber from Toronto, Canada

A beautiful image of strength and determination. I wish them well on their quest for justice!

Nice work. Is this a planned image or at a rally?

At first i thought the photo was of two young girls, older than communion obviously, but maybe confirmation or quinceanera, but there is such sadness there, not the hope i would associate with those other events. Your caption and description adds much to the story. All over the country people were horrified that lobbying and religious agenda won out over common sense and decency in the Prop8 vote. Your photo bears witness to the real people affected by this. And that is photography at its core: bearing witness.
